Colchester Castle

Larger towns nearby include Colchester, the oldest recorded settlement in Britain and famous as the place where Boudicca routed the Roman army.  There is still considerable evidence of the Roman occupation to be seen in Camulodorum (as Colchester was named by the Romans) as well as a castle and the old town with its cobbled streets, mediaeval buildings and pleasant cafes.  In the other direction lies Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk which has a busy shopping centre.  Brightlingsea is a pleasant half hour’s drive away from ‘Constable Country’ in Dedham Vale where Constable lived and painted.  Dedham is a picturesque village and nearby the artist’s birth place of East Bergholt boasts a number of attractions including Flatford Mill, the site of the famous ‘Haywain’ painting and East Bergholt Place.
